WHY?

When your trying to progress your productions aside from any natural talent the thing that will continue to take you to the next level is keeping an open mind and ALWAYS asking “WHY” – did that happen or didnt it?

Wondering Why something happened, or how a track created its impact or why yours didn’t do what you intended is key to your development. Its a small word and when people taste a little success it’s often the first thing they forget as they start to believe the hype that they know it all.

Do as Socrates suggested and believe you know nothing and always ask “Why” so you continue to understand the ever evolving scenario.

It’s often a case of having a great idea that takes numerous iterations of refining to reach that initial idea. It maybe a particular style of riff or arrangement, or a sound that you have to keep developing until they truely work. Take Swedish House Mafia and their big hit this summer – One – You can elements of it in various past productions by the individuals, for example Axwell’s remix of TV Rock’s “On the Radio”, this has very similar chord pattern, the beat has a lot of seb ingrosso to it… it’s like a perfecting of some key ideas they have all brought to the table.

This can only happen if you review and analyis your tunes, what works? does it do what you intended on the dance floor? if not what can you change to make it do so?

The magic of the “Why” question is key to analysing the tunes you love, the impact they have and evolving your own sound. Next time your listening or making music remember to wonder WHY?
