You may or may not know that Lost In Musik is involved with authoring a book of inspiration for music producers and music lovers – kind of like a “Little Book of Zen” but much, much cooler. In the process we’ve have the pleasure of chatting to many an artist, and I’m about to give you a snippet from one that I’m very excited about. The most recent gig of theirs that I ventured to was at the Brixton Academy, London, and I was thoroughly impressed with the visual and sonic production – their three hour set flew by way too fast.
I caught up with Paavo, one third of Above & Beyond, during his constant orbiting of the globe and asked him a few questions. Every fan of trance music will know who Above & Beyond are, but even those that aren’t fond of reaching for the lasers should too. With sellout concerts across the world, playing to a gazillion people on a Brazilian beach, and remixes for major league artists like Madonna and Britney, these guys are undisputed champions of melodic electronic music.
To top it off, their imprint “Anjunabeats” is possibly one of the most successful dance music record labels. If that sounds controversial – how many labels can boast dozens of fans with their logo tattooed in various places? Not many. Enough of the hype, let’s hear some of what 33.3% of Above & Beyond had to say…
What inspires you to make music?
If you could pass on just one production tip to budding producers, what would it be?
From time to time, just for fun and practice, try and produce an exact sounding copy of a track in a different genre. This will teach you a lot about production techniques and can help keep your own productions sounding fresh.
When did you realize you’d made it to the big time?
When Madonna sent us some flowers.
When the going gets tough, what helps you push on?
Talking with people around the world and realising how much the music means to us all.
For you, what is the key difference between a good track and an amazing track?
A good track is one that you think is well put together, maybe even one that makes you dance, but one you’ll forget in a few weeks. An amazing track is one that triggers feelings, memories and emotions and creates a connection that’ll stay with you forever.
Brief but wise words from someone who undoubtedly knows what they’re talking about. The book is packed with stuff like this from a plethora of artists of all genres, ages, and sizes. It will be available for free to our lovely Lost In Musik subscribers initially, so if you want to get involved first just click the ‘subscribe’ button on the right.
Happy Fridays – have a great weekend.
