Mount Kimbie Live Concert – Drum machines, MIDI and EFX

Mount Kimbie Live

Awesome 20minute live concert of electronic/dubstep outfit Mount Kimbie playing live – triggering samples from drum pads and MIDI controllers, then layering with a live drum and guitar to round out the sound. First got into this group couple years ago and have loved everything I’ve heard since.

This is part of the “Tiny Desk Concert” series by NPR music, and it looks like they have some cool shows worth checking out

This shows how with a little organising a relatively simple setup can provide a really cool sound system which can be manipulated well live.  Take heed when they say back up your system, man I took a DEEP breath when the guy’s said they had lost all their production files… nasty!

I’m starting to look at pulling together a new set up, and really like the look of the new Korg Kaoss Pad Quad efx unit. I like the fact it looks pretty straight forward application to apply easy to use efx, and potentially apply 4 efx at once all through the use of one X-Y pad! I’m definitely going to head down to my local store and try this out, my concern after watching the video is the fact that loop function sounds like it is only 1 bar long, I though of hoped for at least 4 bars, maybe 8 or more ideally. Check the video below, from Sonicstate.com, as they put the device through its paces.

It would be great to hear what any of you guys are using to play ‘live’ electronica, particularly to hear from those people who use the Ni’s Maschine, yet to test drive it but it does look rather funky. If you have any videos online feel free to post links below in the comments box.

maschine is fantastic for live performance, but the kaoss pad quad is a bit more of an oddball, it’s very hard to predict the effects it will make, and the loop function is indeed just one bar. it’s a lot of fun though, and I’m sure you could learn to use it in a live setup as well. 🙂 maschine is absolute class though, best piece of gear I own personally!
